About


Michalis Cholevas is a Greek multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator. He is performing on the Yayli Tanbur, Tarhu, Ney and the Saz


He is a Ph.D. holder with a subject of Music analysis of Taksim performances for educational and performance purposes (awarded with Summa Kum Laude), he holds an MA in Performance of Music of the Ottoman Period (under an HSP Dutch excellence scholarship), and a BA in Natural Sciences,  followed by advanced studies in Theoretical Physics.


He studied Byzantine music, the music of eastern Mediterranean cultures, classical and Jazz piano since the age of five.


Michalis  has collaborated with several artists including the Unesco Artist for Peace 2016, Kudsi Ergüner, Ahmad Al Khatib, Rima Khcheich, Angelo Badalamenti, George Kontrafouris Jazz trio, Louisiana Red, he has performed as a soloist for Apollo Musagette Quartet, Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and has been featured as a recording artist on film scores (Bear McCreary – Gozilla, Sylvain Chomet – The Illusionist, Kudsi Erguner - POV).


In 2013, he formed Lingua Franca Ensemble. Their album Ephemera was selected at no.8 for the World Music Charts 2017.


Since 2008 he is a teacher and modules developer for the BA and MA programs at Codarts, University for the Arts, Rotterdam.
